Background Analysis
HCMC, acting through its EMS Division, provides EMS instruction to each of the Minneapolis Fire Department’s Firefighters. The proposed EMS training entity must be a State of Minnesota approved training entity and provide each firefighter-EMT with 12 continuing education units per year or 24 continuing education units every two years. There are approximately 444 sworn personnel who require the training. The EMS curriculum shall meet the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board’s continuing education criteria for the EMT and fulfill the recertification requirement for 24-hour EMT-R with the National EMT Registry. The proposed continuing education program shall make each firefighter-EMT’s certification due to expire each year, eligible for recertification prior to or on their expiration date of that year. Hennepin Healthcare also provides medical direction to the Fire Department and provides services at critical times.
The current contract expired on April 30, 2023. There are funds remaining on the contract and the Fire Department is requesting a 6-month extension with a new expiration date of October 31, 2023. This will allow us to enter into the RFP process for execution of a new contract and, at the same time, to continue our training and education without interruption. The proposed amendment will extend the life of the contract 6 months with a new expiration date of 10/31/2023.
