Background Analysis
As a part of the Council’s direction to develop a 911 / MPD workgroup to examine alternatives response to police, two areas of focus for alternatives emerged; EDP calls and Report Only calls. After a significant amount of research and analysis some preliminary recommendations were made for how to begin prototyping and possibly piloting some of those recommendations. As the work of the 911 / MPD workgroup has evolved, we began looking at other Problem Nature Codes that could possibly warrant responses other than police. The deep dive into Problem Nature Codes, who responds, the time it takes to respond, etc has prompted Council to include additional directives to keep the work of developing alternatives to police responses, where possible, moving forward. Additionally, Council requested that the workgroup move forward with recommendations provided last Fall around moving theft report only calls to 311 and online reporting.
